As mayor I envisioned a digital future for Jasper with the highest level of online connectivity for our businesses and residents. Because of Jasper’s strengths as a regional community I knew fiber was the highway of the future and our team worked hard to promote Jasper to broadband companies who could serve us. Furthermore, I wanted this 21st century technology to be a business investment in Jasper with minimal public funding.
Naysayers here at home and throughout the country told us time and time again that it couldn’t be done; that much larger cities were investing millions of taxpayer dollars into high-speed connectivity; that companies in Jasper who needed fiber already had it; that no company would put in a system without city funding to match it; that we were wasting our time.
THEY WERE ALL WRONG. Jasper will be one of the handful of cities in the entire United States with high-speed digital fiber!
In January of this year we announced that SMITHVILLE FIBER of Ellettsville in nearby Monroe County would indeed bring a digital future to our city AND that their company would invest $7,000,000 in Jasper to build Fiber-to-the-Premise throughout Jasper!
