Efficient or Effective?

In the ideal world, most of us would choose a smooth road – no bumps, no curves, no hills to climb. The reality is just the opposite as we find our lives filled with hurdles, barriers and the like. Astonishingly, we possess the resources to overcome a great deal. In fact, we tolerate a significant amount of irritation from many areas each day including our government.
My experiences this year on a local level confirm we have a great number of concerned and caring city employees who have a genuine interest in making Jasper a wonderful hometown. There is quite a bit of efficiency. On the other hand efficient doesn’t assure effective.
Efficiency is concerned with the status quo or the present. Future thinking, eliminating or increasing resources rocks the efficiency boat. Effectiveness focuses on an end goal and gives consideration to changes impacting the future. Efficiency requires constant discipline resulting in inflexibility. Effectiveness is driven by long-term strategy and, therefore, is more adaptable to change.
My goal as your next mayor will be to deliver a more effective city government and “We’ve always done it this way” will not be a suitable answer to any question.
